Summer 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of the beginning of Rudolf Nureyev’s Western career, which started in Deauville in August 1961. A major figure of 20th-century ballet and former director of the Paris Opera Ballet, he performed there for the first time after his decision not to return to the USSR.
It was in Deauville that his international career truly began, opening a new chapter in the history of dance. The 2026 edition of Deauville sur Pointes pays tribute to this defining moment and to this symbolic place.
Through archives, stories, and the memory of ballet, this lecture explores Deauville’s unique role in the history of Rudolf Nureyev and 20th-century ballet.
